HOW TO — Request a Tutor
In order to receive a tutor, students must e-mail the ATTIC staff (attic@lafayette.edu) with their name, course name and course number they are requesting a tutor for, the professor’s name, and advisor’s name. Once the tutor request is received, the ATTIC will assign an available tutor for that course. Within two business days the student will receive an e-mail from the ATTIC with their tutor’s contact information. The student has one (1) week from the date of e-mail to contact their tutor in order to set up their first tutoring session. If the student does not contact their tutor in a prompt manner, they run the risk of losing the tutor assignment.
Every student receiving a tutor is expected to attend class, complete all assignments, take advantage of professor office hours and come prepared to all scheduled tutoring sessions with their tutor. It is up to the tutor and tutee to schedule tutoring sessions – the ATTIC does not mandate where or when tutoring takes place, as long as it occurs regularly one (1) time per week for one (1) hour.
Due to the high demand for tutoring in certain courses, individual peer tutoring is not always available!
Tutors are provided on a first-come first-served basis beginning the second week of each semester. As the semester progresses, it becomes increasingly difficult to recruit and hire qualified tutors. For this reason, we may have more difficulty accommodating tutoring requests later in the semester.
Tips for Successful Tutoring
- Prepare for your tutoring session. Go to class, review your notes, and do the assigned homework; the more you have done before your tutoring sessions, the more productive it will be. Peer tutors CANNOT do homework problems with you – we do not want to place the tutor or tutee in a potential position of academic dishonesty.
- Be an active learner. Do not sit passively during your session while your tutor does all the talking – ask questions and be honest about your understanding of course concepts.
- Seek help from your professors. At all times, your professor is the BEST resource for your courses. If you are having difficulty beyond your tutoring session, your professor is there to help!
